Sleep-Disordered Breathing & Sleep Screenings

Snoring, mouth breathing, grinding, or even bedwetting after age 5 may be signs of a sleep-related breathing disorder. Our screenings help identify red flags early and guide families toward the right referrals for healthier sleep, growth, and communication.

What is Sleep-Disordered Breathing?

Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) is a term that describes breathing difficulties during sleep, ranging from mild snoring to more serious airway obstructions. For children, even mild disruptions in breathing can affect growth, learning, behavior, and overall health.

Why it matters?

When a child’s airway isn’t functioning properly, their body works harder just to breathe at night. This can impact sleep quality, daytime energy, mood, and even speech and oral development.

Signs & Symptoms to Watch For

  • Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep.
  • Mouth breathing (day or night).
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism).
  • Restless sleep or frequent waking.
  • Bedwetting beyond age 5.
  • Daytime sleepiness or hyperactivity.
  • Forward head posture or open-mouth posture.

Our Role

At Root Speech & Myo, we offer sleep screenings to help families identify potential airway concerns. While we don’t diagnose sleep disorders, we can recognize red flags, provide education, and guide families toward the right referrals (ENTs, sleep specialists, orthodontists, or airway-focused providers).

By addressing airway and oral function early, children can experience better sleep, improved behavior and attention, healthier growth, and stronger communication skills.
